In Transit

Istanbul famously stands as the bridge between Asia, Africa, and Europe, and it is at this geographical crossroads that three migrant families’ stories intersect. Far from the glorious Ottoman architecture and the glamorous Bosphorous nightlife, In Transit shows the tough life of transients stuck in Istanbul, between their war-torn or impoverished past and their imagined and elusive future. This thoroughly engaging video tracks an Iraqi Arab family, an Iraqi Kurdish family, and a Nigerian couple for a full year, witnessing their struggle to adapt to life on the margins of an unforgiving city while awaiting visas and work permits that never seem to come.

The House

The house referenced in the title is an old building, whose past splendour is recognisable despite the apparent lack of upkeep. This enormous house, in the middle of the forest, was a health cure site that Casanova and Voltaire apparently visited in their time. The spring was blocked and Nestlé, which was using it, closed the house.

The Building

The documentary captures the fall or rebuilding what had been a symbol of the Franco regime, but the cessation of work due to the economic crisis turns into a viewer of the financial and economic paralysis of the country during these years.

The Son

In 2013, Dima Ilukhin, the cousin of the film’s director and a soldier in the Russian army, died on duty in the Republic of Dagestan in the North Caucasus. He was 21 years old. This incident marks the starting point for Abaturov’s reflection on the military. He films the training of new recruits in Siberia, as they bid farewell to their mothers and girlfriends, learn the mechanics of a Kalashnikov, or how to throw a hand grenade and administer first aid. While his parents try to cope with their loss, Dima’s former fellow recruits have to return to battle.

Alive and Undefeated

Year 2016 - Decommunisation is spreading across Ukraine. In the Lviv region, in the very heart of Bandera's territory, there is the town of Chervonohrad, famous for being the first Soviet place where a statue of Lenin was torn down. However, even 26 years later, there is a heated debate between the proponents of different ideologies. We see the opposite poles of Ukrainian society in front of us: a choir of the Russian community named The Living Memory, and a singing couple of OUN-URA nationalists called the Undefeated. What they have in common is the Chervonohrad People's House. The story is about the deep, implicit processes which actually stand behind the torn-down monuments, and about the way two parallel universes collide in the Chervonohrad People's House.
