Easterner Alva Leigh arrives in the mining town of Magnet just after her fiancΓ©, Donald Jaffray, has been murdered. Because Alva has sworn vengeance, "Sudden" Duncan, the real murderer, accuses Donald's partner, Dick Randall, of the crime. Knowing that Dick is planning a journey across the desert, Duncan fills his canteen with poison, but Alva, who also is determined to kill Dick, drills a hole in the canteen so that the water will drain out. After Dick's departure, Alva learns from "Tiger Lil'," who is jealous of Duncan's attention to the Eastern newcomer, that it was Duncan who killed Donald. Frantic, Alva immediately mounts a horse and rides into the desert to save the man she now recognizes as her true love. Tiger Lil' shoots Duncan in a dance hall quarrel, and Alva marries Dick.

Tom is assigned to track down the murderer, but after he arrives at the tavern, Galbraith and Pierre drug him. Jen delivers the papers he is carrying to police headquarters, but when she discovers that they contain orders to arrest her brother, she shoots Tom to prevent him from going after Val.

Broncho Billy, the sheepman, goes to the village store and purchases an engagement ring for his sweetheart, the school teacher. As he is about to mount his horse, he finds a note pinned to the saddle, telling him to leave the country that only cow men are desired. On his way home he is fired upon by the cattle king and his gang. Broncho Billy returns the fire wounding the leader, but also is wounded himself. He goes to the school house, where he is protected by his sweetheart until help arrives. In the meantime the wounded cattle king has been picked up unconscious by Broncho Billy's parents.
