Going through Leonardo Favio's film career means reuniting with images and sounds that built a sensibility that keeps expanding generation after generation. This documentary follows the path of a unique filmmaker by means of a scheme of voices, including that of Favio himself, with the lucidity and brutal honesty so typical of him.

Vadiação

Focusing on capoeira, Vadiação was previously storyboarded by artist Carybé. Its soundtrack preserves the typical chants and berimbau music which are part of that practice, as the film illustrates the evolution of capoeira, simultaneously a martial art and a dance.

My Mom Jayne

The Sky Is Red

In 2010, 81 inmates died in a huge fire at San Miguel prison in Chile’s capital city Santiago. Inside, they were trapped behind bars like rats; outside, dozens of family members waiting for visiting hours to begin looked on helplessly as their loved ones shouted for help. The doors remained locked. This reconstruction sheds light on the utter failure of the prison’s administration, which was housing twice as many prisoners as permitted.

Foreign Volunteers: In the Hell of Raqqa

Inspired by the mythology of the International Brigades of the Spanish Civil War, over 300 foreign volunteers chose to give up their comfortable lives and go fight ISIS in Raqqa. We filmed them there, fly-on-the-wall style, fighting, talking, laughing, being attacked by suicide bombs and sniper fire. We were with them until Raqqa was freed. And then we followed them back home – changed forever. Every night, between July and October 2017, young men with no previous military experience pushed through the most dangerous streets of the world. They conquered Raqqa, block after block. They met death and violence. And eventually, along with the Kurdish and Arab forces of the Syrian Democratic Forces, they liberated Raqqa and ended the reign of the most murderous cult of the XXI century. Some of them went back home. We were there when they told their story to their families. This is the untold story of the young Westerners who left everything behind to fight ISIS.

Huracán

Aimed to educate the people, and especially those who lived in the most vulnerable areas, about important safety measures to be taken before, during, and after a storm. The film takes a decidedly modern, scientific approach in its discussion of hurricanes, and it goes to great lengths to dispel popular lore that many of the island’s under-educated inhabitants still relied on for weather predictions.

Happy Generation

For a decade, the unexpected theater group “Os Felizes da Fé” left its mark on the late 20 century’s art map. With its street happenings, the Felizes defied all forms of authority: civil, political or moral. However, their activity stopped suddenly in 1995.

Static

In this film I was interested in making places that were far apart in physical distance appear next to each other in cinematic time. Each shot is an independent scene from a separate location and I animated objects and materials found in these places. The optical soundtrack is mixed low, so that the sound of the static electricity on the track mixes with the recorded soundtrack.
