Family Business

The family of Polish woman Jowita lacks the money needed to finally finish building their house, which has been under construction for years. In order to be able to afford the remaining work, Jowita goes to Germany for a few months to work as a housekeeper. It is difficult for her to say goodbye to her husband and child, and the welcome she receives in Germany from Anne, whom she is to look after from now on, is not very warm at first. The 88-year-old, who suffers from early-stage dementia, finds it difficult to accept the stranger in her household. But little by little, the women find a way to get along with each other, as is now the case in many German households where Polish caregivers move in with elderly people. Director Christiane Büchner accompanies Anne and Jowita's everyday life with her camera, without actively intervening in the events herself.

Pixote In Memoriam

A tribute documentary on Fernando Ramos da Silva, the famous child star of the acclaimed film by Hector Babenco, "Pixote, a Lei do Mais Fraco" (1981). 20 years after his assassination by the police, his co-stars and Babenco talk about Fernando's contributions to the film, his troubled life when his acting works didn't took off as expected (since he was typecast) and which made him turn back to his past life of poverty and crimes. The project also presents that film's influence to many directors and artists around the world.

Com Que Voz is a documentary that recounts the life of Alain Oulman, an important cultural figure during the nineteen-sixties and seventies, who left an indelible mark on Portuguese and French society. The film, shot in Lisbon, Paris and Tel Aviv, features celebrated authors, politicians and musicians, such as: Patricia Highsmith, Amos Oz, Amalia Rodrigues and Mario Soares.

The Oyster-Man

This short film is an introduction to oyster farming in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Showing the various stages of oyster cultivation, the film highlights the sampling of larvae by Department of Fisheries biologists, the staking of oyster beds by farmers, the nurturing of spat, and underwater scenes showing the dragging of the seabed with cotton mops to ensnare starfish, which prey upon the oyster. Final sequences show the grading and shipping of oysters and their arrival at the seafood restaurant or family dinner table.

The film follows the final days of Brazil’s 2022 presidential election through livestreams and edits on the Chinese social media platform TikTok, which at that time had around 80 million active users in the country.
