The Complainers

A look at the lives and opinions of three hard-to-please consumer crusaders who fight for the rights of dissatisfied customers. Alan is a cocky, streetwise hardman; Barry a boisterous businessman; and David Birkin a short but bullish campaigner whose chief grievance is the ripeness of fruit sold at Tesco. Alan Birkin and two carpet salesmen also appear in Dominic Savage's documentary Rogue Males, where the origins of Birkin's dispute over a carpet purchase are first seen. While the salesmen form part of the wider ensemble in Rogue Males, The Complainers shifts its focus to Birkin, making him one of the documentary's central figures as the dispute continues.

Another Life

The documentary film Another Life continues the main theme of The Happy People series: man’s faith in himself and his great capacity for survival. This is a film about strong people who are free spirits and who are not concerned with the majority of things that excite city dwellers. Perhaps these fates can serve as an example, can help us see ourselves through another person’s eyes, and allow us to take a new look at our own lives.

Garbage Ho!

Harald Reichenbach sets off around the globe in a sailing boat collecting garbage from the sea with local people. Using a press, he compresses what they find and pours it into resin to form ‚G-Cubes’. He then takes the garbage back as art to the people who created it – consumers in industrialized countries. Nothing on the journey goes exactly as planned, however, and Reichenbach finds himself teetering between art and activism.

John Guidetti - The Goalden Year

Mitayero

In the liminal space between the jungle and the wide river that runs through it, steeped in myths of anacondas, piranhas and jaguars, a man has lived alone in a secluded hut for twenty years. A hunter’s voice from the past shares a dream with his wife in which wild animals seek revenge on him, placing into question how everyday life will be lived in their future. While the couple’s human drama unfolds, nature remains unphased, time and the river moving forward – or is it backwards? This film was made in the Amazon Jungle, Peru, during PlayLab Films’ Director’s Lab with Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Taurophilia

Through rhythmic re-composition of fragmented images, semi-surreal situations are explored in a documentary style of observation of a man's obsession with a powerful animal, the black horned bull, and the Spanish process of taxidermy through which he attempts to embody its beauty and strength, turning into a Minotaur. The subdued basement space in which the man meticulously studies the motionless flesh of the animal is preceded by a sunlit, empty arena in Spain, the stage in which the bull is presented in its full glory before facing man.

In this film about apprentices of the Rewatex laundry, Böttcher once again turns to the focal concern of almost all his films the attempt to report as truthfully and impressibly as possible on the life of workers. Böttcher takes the audience into the midst of a seemingly unknown environment only to let them realize how familiar this world in fact is.

Wandering around the museum, more than just visiting, is directing a visit. Each visitor unconsciously creates their own movie according to their pace through the exhibition, their route, their interest and their company.
