Sapinho Admirável

The Arm Wrestler

Panayiotis is a 30-year-old champion at arm wrestling and owner of a tavern in a remote Greek village. On the occasion of a forthcoming arm-wrestling fight in Athens and his training for it, the film builds the portrait of a young man who shifts daily between his dreams and the reality of life in the Greek countryside.

Wiedźmy

A 2001 documentary about one of the branches of the Polish feminist movement. Narrated by Zofia Miłuńska, president of the Dakini Association for the Comprehensive Development of Women. The film has not yet been released because the screening committee for Polish Television's Program 2 deemed it unsuitable for broadcast on ethical and aesthetic grounds.

Americans All

A film sponsored by the U.S. Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs to promote friendly relations with American countries just before World War II. Stresses the importance of the Good Neighbor Policy and Western Hemisphere cooperation in the face of Europe's disintegration. The first half is an historical summary of the American continent. Postulating that youth will build a new world, the last half considers youth at work, youth at school, health conditions, defense, and ends with a plea for American solidarity.

For the artist Fernand Leger (1881-1955), the promise of film as a new art form lay in its potential to exhibit the visual, to present an image rather than tell a story. This attribute characteristic of early cinema, a ’cinema of attractions’ (Tom Gunning), has been directly associated with avant-garde film in terms of visual exhibitionism as well as the construction of an audience that is both directly addressed and actively engaged.

In the late 1970s, Marcel fled Catalonia to avoid conscription into the Spanish military. For 30 years he has been living in the tropical forests of Costa Rica, where he hosts ayahuasca ceremonies for young seekers from the West.

A Sea Change

A Sea Change takes its audience to the IBIS maritime boarding school in Ostende (Belgium). In buildings that look out towards the sea, boys from six to sixteen sleep, eat and play. They learn how to read the sea, sail with a fishing boat and help haul in the catch. In the classrooms, the impetuous sea is captured in maps. On sea maps, there are no storms and there is no time: the sea might seem timeless, but much is changing. The coast is permeated with nostalgia, as if the sea had turned its face to the past. Sooner or later the fishing fleet will disappear, together with many endangered species of fish. The fish auction hall in Ostende is in decay, the harbour coated in rust. Nonetheless, a new colour is appearing from beneath the peeling paint.
